Madagascar Fly Fishing

Madagascar Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing, Salt Water, Trip Report
I recently had the pleasure of travelling to the 8th continent, Madagascar, for my honeymoon. It went without question that my fly rods were the first items to be packed and I'm grateful to say that my wife didn't bat an eyelid. We flew into Antananarivo on a Tuesday with the temperature being a chilly 19 degrees when we landed. This left us a little concerned since neither of us had packed any warm clothes. Things then got off to a rocky start when our airport transfer didn't arrive and we were left to fend for ourselves in a foreign, non English speaking, country. After battling off hundreds of "taxi" drivers and locals trying to grab our bags we finally climbed into a car. Much to our horror our "taxi"…

Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Trip Report, Trout
[caption id="attachment_485" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Sani Pass Sunrise[/caption] With my wedding looming Nick stepped up to the plate as my best man and took me fly fishing in Lesotho as part one of my bulls. [caption id="attachment_487" align="alignright" width="300"] Terios Wheelie[/caption] At 3:30am I lazily climbed out of bed, pulled on my Columbia kit and did a last minute check of my gear. One of the pleasures of fishing small streams is just how lightly one can travel. My float tube was left in firmly its box and I picked up my 2 weight rod, backpack with lunch, and fly vest and headed out the door. By 4am we were on the road to Lesotho stopping off at our usual garage. The only difference was that when we pulled in they…

[caption id="attachment_479" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Lotheni Star Trails[/caption] Long weekends are not made to be wasted, and what better way to take advantage of one than by heading to Lotheni, one of my favourite (wild) brown trout waters. [caption id="attachment_476" align="alignright" width="300"] Warren Prior Tying Flies[/caption] With Sharon as my wingman for this trip I decided to cut her some slack and to head up a little later than I usually would with Nick. We left our house at around 6am and stopped off at the Lavender Trout for breakfast. Amazingly they had run out eggs which forced us back into the car in search of another breakfast venue. We opted for a bistro in The Junction at Nottingham Road. Both of our meals were fantastic and when we left Nottingham…

Cape Vidal

[caption id="attachment_452" align="alignleft" width="300"] Fly Fishing Reels[/caption] At 4am on Friday morning Nick pulled into the Plantations parking lot to pick me up for an epic long weekend at Cape Vidal. The Baha Boys had teamed up with the Durban Fly Tyers for a fly fishing trip that was certainly not to be forgotten. We vigorously packed the car and then headed for the garage at the first toll plaza on the N2. Despite it being so early we were oozing excitement and rearing to go. Just before 5am (the planned meeting time) we pulled into the garage and found ourselves a stool in the Steers where we ordered ourselves a steaming cup of coffee. Feeling a little peckish we also snuck in a small Steers burger which was quite…

[caption id="attachment_438" align="aligncenter" width="900"] The Little Mooi At Glengarry, Kamberg[/caption] Things got off to a ropey start when Sharon woke up sick at 3am. "This can’t be good," the fisherman in me thought. Thankfully after taking a few pills she climbed back into bed and we managed to doze for another hour or so until we climbed out of bed at 4:30am. [caption id="attachment_435" align="alignleft" width="300"] The Priors On The Bushmans River[/caption] We packed the car slowly but Sharon seemed to be feeling a little better so I kept cautiously quiet. Just after 5am we pulled out of the complex and finally started our long weekend away. Our first stop was of course the BP garage for freshly brewed coffee before setting our sights on Giants Castle and, more importantly,…

[caption id="attachment_332" align="alignright" width="300"] Warren Prior At The Boston Fly Fishing Festival[/caption] Over the long weekend in June 2011 the Baha Boys headed to the Boston\Dargle area to fish the first ever Boston Fly Fishing Festival. Having never fished a competition before the drive up was with filled with both excitement and questions. We were unsure of the format of the competition and were left wondering how we would be monitored, what there would be prizes for, and whether the bar would have enough bottles of rum. Upon arrival at 4pm on Thursday we entered the hall to be greeted by an Xplorer branded tent, the registration table and a very enthusiastic Pete who was in charge of the whole thing. We chatted to him about some of the waters…

[caption id="attachment_247" align="alignright" width="300"] Flies For Sterkfontein[/caption] Sterkies was to be the first official fly fishing trip of the Baha Boys. That said, there were only 2 fishermen amongst the 6 of us so it was going to be tough to get in a lot of time on the water. Even after a difficult drive to Sterkies (thanks to some car troubles) Nick and I were in high spirits as we discussed the mornings fishing plans over a rum at midnight. Despite being the last to bed we were the first up and were ready to go. Sadly we got off to a rather slow start, sorting out the boat etc, but this was to be expected on the first morning. When we eventually got into the water we headed…
