Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Trout
[caption id="attachment_274" align="alignright" width="300"] Fish Eye View Of A Trout[/caption] Sunday was a day of fishing and Nick and I headed to Granchester at 5:30am. The Proteas loss soon became a distant memory as we pumped the tubes and kicked our way out onto the water. Having not fished the water before we both made our way to what we considered the good spots. I fished the weed beds while Nick fished the deeper water. Within 30 minutes I was into my first fish, a nice 1kg Rainbow picked up off a bank. Shortly after this Nick picked up a similar sized fish near the inlet. I paddled over to him to take a photo or two and left my fly dead drifting in the water a meter or so…

Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Trip Report, Yellowfish
[caption id="attachment_247" align="alignright" width="300"] Flies For Sterkfontein[/caption] Sterkies was to be the first official fly fishing trip of the Baha Boys. That said, there were only 2 fishermen amongst the 6 of us so it was going to be tough to get in a lot of time on the water. Even after a difficult drive to Sterkies (thanks to some car troubles) Nick and I were in high spirits as we discussed the mornings fishing plans over a rum at midnight. Despite being the last to bed we were the first up and were ready to go. Sadly we got off to a rather slow start, sorting out the boat etc, but this was to be expected on the first morning. When we eventually got into the water we headed…

Reekie Lyn And Kamberg Bashing

Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Trout
[caption id="attachment_235" align="aligncenter" width="900"] An In Flood Reekie Lyn[/caption] I picked up Bruce and Nick at 5:30am and we began the long journey to Reekie Lyn, a 5km section of the Mooi River just below Kamberg, which we would be fishing for the day. Sadly things got off to a bad start when the rain started bucketing down before we'd even reached Cato Ridge. None the less we pushed on, stopping only for our regular cup of very average coffee from the Wild Bean Cafe. An hour later, and nearing Nottingham Road, the rain was still pouring down. Bruce had taken to dropping hints about stopping for a cooked breakfast and Nick was starting to nod in agreement. [caption id="attachment_236" align="alignright" width="300"] Warren Fishing Erskine[/caption] Thankfully, just as the two…

[caption id="attachment_225" align="alignleft" width="300"] Warren With A Durban Harbour Gurnard[/caption] With the upcoming trip to Sterkfontein looming Nick decided he was in need of some new flies. This saw us heading down to Kingfisher to pick up a few beetles and hoppers for what we were hoping to be some great sight fishing for Yellows. And what would a trip to Durban be without a quick stop in at Durban Harbour to try and bash some Kingfish. The tide was pushing when we arrived at 7:30am and we started our fishing on the breakwater located close to Point Yacht Club. There were a lot of fish cruising the edge of the pier but I was unable to identify exactly what they were. They did however look like game fish due…

Fly Fishing, Randoms
[caption id="attachment_221" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Thanks For Signing My Copy Nick, Even Though I Wrote The Article[/caption] Just 2 years after I got this site off the ground and good things are starting to happen. This is in a large part thanks to Baha Boys founding member Nick Nortje who chatted to the owner of Angler's Talk Magazine, Marlon Sukhnunan. (Angler's Talk is a free fishing, boating & outdoor supplement published once a month in the East Coast) As part of this discussion Nick pointed out the Baha Boys' website which Marlon apparently took a liking too. They chatted about writing an article for the publication and Nick pointed Marlan in my direction for further information and photos from the site. After this however I heard nothing from Angler's Talk and…

It’s Harbour Time (Can’t Catch This)

Fly Fishing, Salt Water
[caption id="attachment_218" align="alignleft" width="300"] No Gurneys[/caption]It was a fast becoming a lazy Sunday and Nick was spending it destroying his lounge floor. I on the other hand was getting itchy fingers and needed to flick a fly into water of any kind. Thankfully, just as I was running the bath to practice my casting, Nick smsed to let me know that the tiling was going faster than expected and that we could indeed go for an impromptu fish. The chosen water was the Durban harbour and we arrived at around 12:30pm. This of course is far from the ideal time, but then again, the best time to catch a fish is when your fly is in the water. We opted to fish the pier at the Royal Natal Yacht Club…

Back To The Harbour

Fly Fishing, Salt Water
Since Sharon was visiting her folks in Richards Bay, I decided it was time to get in another fish. The original plan was to head to the Drakensberg to bash a few trout, but sadly my fishing buddy got tied up and I was left on my own. This meant falling back to plan B, which is never a bad thing, so I pulled out the old salt water stick and headed down to Durban harbour. When I arrived the conditions looked fantastic. There was the slightest breeze on the water and it was partially cloudy. With a Charlie tied onto the end of my line I headed down to the water, which was surprisingly warm, and flicked in my first cast. There was a lot of mullet action around…

Mavela Double Up

Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Trout
[caption id="attachment_210" align="alignright" width="300"] Nick And Warren Double Up[/caption] Saturday's fishing saw the normal 4:30am alarm call followed by an attempted twosie. This of course never works, so after picking up Bruce and Nick at 5am, I was careful with the morning's cup of coffee. We reached the dam at around 6:30am and were on the water by 7am. Things really were looking good...the water wasn't too warm, we had a good cloud cover with a little mist, and there was a ripple on the surface of the dam. Sadly this lasted all of 30 minutes before the sun beat away the clouds and the wind vanished without a trace. Before we knew it we were bobbing around on a piece of glass, in 30 degree heat, with very few…

[caption id="attachment_207" align="alignleft" width="300"] Nick Nortje At Mavela[/caption]The plan for Sunday had been a fishing trip for Nick's birthday, but WeatherSA (those bastards) had predicted cold fronts and Armageddon so we'd called it off. Then an amazing thing happened, we woke up to the most beautiful day. WOW! They’d gotten it wrong...when has that ever happened before (where's the sarcasm font). Anyway, Nick gave me a call and we ended up heading for the dam at 9am. The girls joined us and picnicked on the side of the damn while Nick and I went about missing fish after fish. I suppose the good news is that there were fish around, and after missing 2 or 3 fish each, we eventually both landed one which ended Nick's dry spell with the…
