Fishing Lake Conjola – Gales, Gutted Tents, and Eventual Success

This year for Easter we decided to head down to Lake Conjola for a week of camping and fishing with friends. We arrived on Saturday and spent our first afternoon setting up camp and having a few beers. We'd chosen to stay at Holiday Haven due to its easy access to a boat ramp, the lake, and the beach. And let's be honest, because we booked so late and this was one of the few options still available! That being said, it was a cracker! Absolutely perfect for us. I highly recommend it and I'll definitely head back there at some stage. Great Keppel Island 2025 – Fishing, Diving, Family!

The full Great Keppel Island adventure video is officially live on YouTube. Baron Island absolutely turned on the heat for us on this trip. The local reefs provided some stellar fishing, hooking into steamtrain trevally on light gear that had the drag screaming. But the real magic happened when we geared up and dropped beneath the surface. By day, we were sharing the crystal-clear water with olive sea snakes, manta rays, and nemos. By night, we rolled off the boat into the pitch black for a night dive and found ourselves surrounded by squid, octopus, and epaulette sharks. Two Days Fishing Moreton Bay

My family and I amazingly managed to escape the latest Sydney lockdown by flying into Brisbane, two weeks prior to a planned Keppel Island vacation. That said, it wasn't all plain sailing, and we were forced into 14 days of lockdown by the Queensland premier. Thankfully we were still allowed out to exercise, which happened to include fishing, and so this is exactly what we did. Over the course of our 14 day lockdown Nick and I took the boat our twice, both times in Moreton Bay, focusing in on the Peel Island area. We drifted bait over structure, picking up a handful of species including snapper, sweet lips, cod, tuskfish, and so many more. Nick picked us up from the airport and, much to my wife's dismay, immediately started discussing the day's fishing plans. We dropped the family off at Nick's place, had a quick cup of coffee, hitched up the boat, and headed for Moreton Bay. Conditions on the bay were near perfect - well, for us humans. Another Bait Outing – Grunter Bashing

Since this is primarily a fly fishing blog, I'm not going to spend too much time describing (or justifying) my bait fishing outing. Suffice to say it was a great day on the water despite tough conditions, mostly due to strong winds. Fishing was tough with only a handful of grunter coming to hand, of which only 1 was of size. This poor fellow was unfortunate enough to make it home to my pan and went down well with chips and a side salad. You really can't beat fresh (mercury filled) fish. A Rare Bait Outing

On the odd occasion us Baha Boys down our fly rods and head out instead with a bait stick in hand. Sunday was one such day. Alan had invited me to join him on his trusty vessel to do a little grunter fishing in the harbour. Needing to pump some cracker we got to the harbour shortly after 9am, just as the banks were beginning to expose themselves. I have to admit, I felt a twinge of jealousy as I watched a fly fisherman land a small fish while I was dirtying my hands with the cracker pump. Jet Ski Epic

[caption id="attachment_187" align="alignright" width="300"] Jet Ski Fishing[/caption] At 4am on Sunday I was up and ready for the first epic Baha Boys deep sea fishing trip. Nick and I hooked up the Jet Ski and headed for Umdloti, stopped at a garage of course for a quick coffee and kak (you can't go at sea). At 5:30am we pushed the ski into the surf, and Nick pulled off a dodgy launch. There was a decent shore break, so the plan was we push the ski into the water, Nick jumps on and starts it, then I jump on and we go. Bait Fishing Durban Harbour

Sadly it wasn't a fly line, but having sat out for a few weeks I was willing to take anything. Nick picked me up at 7:30 and we headed down to the harbour where we met his brother. We knew high tide was at 6am, but we figured that we'd still be able to pump some cracker. This turned into a more entertaining experience than expected. Lets just say its rather interesting trying to pump cracker in waist deep water. But being the tough guys we are, we managed the deed and soon had our lines in the water. Standing waste…
